Elgg is a great as development platform for a custom social network. Although it can be a little challenging the first 2-3 weeks when developing, after you master the idea behind the view, override, hooks, actions and plugins, it is great for rapid development. While out of the box Elgg use d to be sluggish, this is no longer the case. Now we do not see any disadvantage for the unmatched flexibility. ( we have no core Elgg function, just users)
Great

I use this on two of my sites... its definitely great, and I totally recommend to anyone new to the field, or you just want a quick and easy start-up

In the past I have used elgg for a few things. This is my first time with 3.0. Clean and seems to do everything right. The fact that there are less plugins for 3.0 is a good thing -- easier to find what you need.
