Matomo (formerly Piwik) is the leading open-source analytics platform that gives you more than just powerful analytics: Matomo aims to be an open source alternative to Google Analytics. Matomo is a PHP MySQL software program that you download and install on your own webserver. At the end of the five minute installation process you will be given a JavaScript tag. Simply copy and paste this tag on websites you wish to track (or use an existing plugin to do it automatically for you).

Of all the free "analytics" available Piwik is head and shoulders above the rest on offer. It has an excellent interface of which is customizable to your personal preferences. It has detailed information about your visitors of which is far superior to Google. Treat yourself - choose Piwik as you will not be disappointed.

much better than google analytics. plus it's your data and you are not reliant on what google dictates you can see. data is yours so google can't then use your site data to target your customers with competitor ads. why people trust google with their important data by using google analytics is beyond me. this is a much better solution for everyone

Full featured Google Analytics alternative. Highly detailed reporting and very stable. Some documentation could be better but that is a minor issue. Excellent open source project!

I have used Piwik on the Art website and its sister sites for several years now. My browser loads the page every day and the tracking is something like a heartbeat for the project. It is clean, simple to modify/tweak and very reliable. For an open source project it matches the work I do here and it is definitely one piece of software to have on your side.
